IT Governance in a Malaysian Public Institute of Higher Learning and Intelligent Decision Making Support System Solution

Abstract

IT governance in public universities is yet to be fully appreciated. This is because IT governance is just evolving as a new paradigm to take care of the stakeholders’ expectations in leveraging IT with business goals. This study explores issues of IT governance and the use of IDMSS in a public university in Malaysia. The interviews and documents were analysed to generate themes. The findings show the need for effective IT governance in the university. This will enable optimal usage of IT resources, which are expected to have an impact on the university’s performance. Moreover, COBIT framework is presented to provide the benchmark of international standards and practices that the university can adopt in the future. Finally, two IDMSS methods are presented for application in this study. This empirical study on IT governance in the context of a public Institute of Higher learning in Malaysia attempts to document the role of IT and the evolution of its practices in the context of a university.

Decision support systems can contribute to efficient exchange of information between experts, stakeholders, decision makers and laypeople. However, intelligent Information technology (IT) governance decision support system for public universities is yet to be thoroughly investigated. This study explores issues of IT governance and the suggestion for ITG Intelligent decision making support system (IDMSS) in a public university in Malaysia. The interviews and documents were analysed to generate themes. The findings show the need for effective IT governance in the university. This will enable optimal usage of IT resources, which are expected to have an impact on the university's performance. The findings is aligned to Control Objectives for Information and related Technology (COBIT) framework and then several proposals from extant researches on IDMSS are described to form a basis for an intelligent ITG DMSS framework suitable for adoption in the context of public Institutes of Higher learning in Malaysia. MyAIS meeting in FTMS, UKM

Today, we had a MyAIS formation meeting in FTMS, UKM from 9.00 - 1.00 pm. All AIS registered members were invited for the meeting. What a great turn up. About 40 academics, practitioner/professional and student members attended and were active in giving their thoughts and concerns for MyAIS by-laws.

Wishing MyAIS a great success and excellent at national and international levels.

Members are giving serious thoughts and idea-sharing session during the meeting

Malaysia Association for Information System (MyAIS)

Pada 23 January 2013, AJK penaja MyAIS mengadakan satu lagi bengkel untuk mencerahkan lagi situasi penubuhan MyAIS bab Malaysia di Hotel Permaisuri, Ayer Keroh Melaka.

Saya telah menghantar kertas cadangan untuk MyAIS ke AIS di Amerika pada tahun 2009 dan telah diluluskan. Namun, atas sebab-sebab tertentu, MyAIS tak aktif sehingga kami mendapat berita bahawa ajk penaja 2009 tak diiktiraf (hasil bantahan dari seorang pensyarah) dan MyAIS kena mula baharu.

Kini, kami MyAIS bersemangat baru untuk menghidupkan semula MyAIS demi minat mendalam kami terhadap Information System (IS) dan berhasrat untuk mengembangkan ilmu dan pencapaian MyAIS di Malaysia, Asia dan dunia.
